Stevegerber

Much funnier than Bruce Tinsley, but not as funny as Dick Lundy or Tex Avery.

Steve Gerber (1947-2008) was an American comic book writer best known as the creator of Marvel Comics character Howard the Duck. Famous for his runs on Man-Thing, The Defenders, Daredevil and many others, Geber was known for bucking trends with his skill for weaving social satire and absurdist comedy into traditional comic book adventures—in one famous instance, his failure to meet a deadline on an issue of Howard led him to substitute the story with an illustrated prose piece detailing conversation between himself and the title character. His confrontational creative style and unusual brand of humour branded him as a wild card in the industry, a reputation that was punctuated by his possessiveness of his characters and in particular, a legal battle with Marvel Comics for ownership of Howard the Duck.

Gerber served as the story editor for the third season of the Generation One animated series alongside Flint Dille and Marv Wolfman, but sadly never wrote any episodes of the series himself. Additionally, Dan DiDio recalls that Gerber pitched "a wildly original take on Transformers" for the Beast Machines animated series, but the details of this pitch are unknown. And the universe is a little worse off because of it.

Gerber died on 10 February 2008, from complications stemming from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
