Stunticons

Unfortunately, this image lost the Clint Eastwood reference to the poncho.

In envy of the Autobots' vehicular modes, Megatron stole various human vehicles and customized them so he could have his own car team, the Stunticons. Before they were given life, he brought them out for a test drive via remote control, forcing them to flip, somersault, fly off the road, drive up cliffs and bash through forests without a scratch. The Stunticons having satisfied Megatron's idea of normalcy, he headed to the supercomputer Vector Sigma on Cybertron to get Cybernetic personalities for them. On activation, they swore loyalty to Megatron... or at least agreed to do what he told them to.

Their first mission was to steal the superfuel from the humans. As they smashed up the superfuel facility, the human guards immediately assumed that they were Autobots, since the Decepticons could not possibly transform into land vehicles. The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 1

Note: Events from the UK-only comic stories are in italics.

The Stunticons were first seen when Buster Witwicky experienced a nightmare as a result of a message he received from the Creation Matrix, where he saw Menasor battling Superion. Optimus Prime later joined him for a more coherent dream where they saw the Stunticons encounter the Protectobots while trying to gain control of a stricken power plant, forming Menasor and Defensor. After they were joined by Superion and Bruticus, Menasor accidentally shot his fellow Decepticon before himself being shot by Superion. The vision was monitored by Shockwave and the Decepticons, who for some reason thought the Stunticons would be useful to have around and started building them. Second Generation

Once Megatron was back in charge of the Decepticons, he gave life to the Stunticons by using the cerebro shell that Bombshell had implanted in Optimus Prime to transfer power from the Creation Matrix to them. He then sent them on a mission to spoil the good publicity the Autobots had gained after Skids saved a motorist. The Stunticons converged on Skids' position and battled RAAT. When the Aerialbots arrived, they formed Menasor to fight Superion. After Circuit Breaker was kind enough to take care of Superion for them, the Stunticons were driven off by RAAT. Heavy Traffic The Stunticons' luck ran out the next time the two gestalts battled, as an error in Superion's programming caused the Aerialbots' thought patterns to become intertwined and the robot to go berserk and deliver an enraged beating to Menasor. Perchance to Dream

Motormaster later made the mistake of claiming the Stunticons could beat Optimus Prime, prompting Megatron to throw a rock at him and tell him to stop being silly. PreyThe Stunticons were part of the convoy of Decepticons heading to their new base in the Florida Keys, with Dead End being given the dubious honour of transporting Megatron. It was a thankless task in every way imaginable, as not only did they have to put up with Megatron destroying articulated lorries he thought were his arch enemy and being attacked by the Predacons but when they discovered evidence that Shockwave was behind the assassination attempt, his response was to blow himself up and leave Shockwave in charge. Gone But Not Forgotten

The Stunticons weren't seen for some time after that until Drag Strip was among the troops Shockwave assembled to deal with an attacking Galvatron. It was an optimistic move so it's probably lucky Galvatron wasn't really attacking, just tricking Shockwave into launching a pre-emptive strike that left him looking bad. Enemy Action

After Ratbat had assumed command of the faction, the Stunticons were seen among the large group of Decepticons that attacked the combined crews of the Ark and Steelhaven assembled on the moon. They were beaten back when Grimlock and Blaster joined the battle. Totalled

The Stunticons were later among the staff when Ratbat set up the Decepticons' island base as the Club Con resort as cover for their search for Autobot tapes Raindance and Grand Slam. Club Con Drag Strip was given the important job of escorting the captive Buster back to his cell. The Flames of Boltax

The Stunticons weren't seen again after that. They may have been among the troops who were deactivated during the battle for Underbase or they may even have been deactivated before that.

Marvel UK future timeline[]

In 2003, the Stunticons were alerted by Ravage to the fact that Kup was transporting a tape containing the plans to Autobot City to the Earth government. They ambushed him and stole the tape, then beat up Hot Rod when he came after them to retrieve it, blissfully unaware that the tape was a fake. Ark Duty

In 2007, when Cyclonus and Scourge launched an attack on Shockwave, the Stunticons formed Menasor to smash their way into the throne room. They succeeded in apprehending the pair but were too late to stop Shockwave being killed by Death's Head and ended up having to accept Cyclonus and Scourge as their new leaders. The Legacy of UnicronLater, after Soundwave had taken command of the Decepticons, the Stunticons were among the troops he assembled for an attack on the supposedly deserted Autobase. However, it turned out this was just a ruse by the Quintessons to get them all in one place for an ambush and they were forced to team up with a group of Autobots led by Ultra Magnus to fight them. Space Pirates

Earthforce[]

The Stunticons seemed to be hedging their bets as to which Decepticon commander to follow during the Earthforce saga. Dead End and Drag Strip were first seen taking orders from Megatron during his attempt to release a gas to raise Earth's temperature in order to gain more energon Starting Over but around the same time Motormaster was seen battling the Dinobots as part of Shockwave's faction. Two Steps BackThen, after Prowl foiled Megatron's plan, Dead End and Drag Strip fought with the Battlechargers to try and obtain the gas canisters for Shockwave. Life in the Slow LaneBy the time of Enclave, they seemed to have settled on Megatron, fighting against the Predacons and Triple Changers when the meeting descended into a brawl The Bad Guy's Ball but it's perhaps not surprising that when Soundwave framed Wildrider as a double agent, Megatron gave him a fair trial lasting about two seconds before blowing him to bits Secrets.

The surviving Stunticons were probably relieved when Soundwave announced the two Decepticon factions were uniting under the command of himself and Starscream Internal Affairs and soon after joined him in an attack on the Earthforce base. Divide and Conquer Possibly their finest hour came when they launched a surprise raid on the base, taking out Grimlock and Prowl and abducting journalist Irwin Spoon. Front LineThey fared less well in the high speed chase that followed, which left all four on the casualty list, although they probably took some consolation in the fact that not only did they take Prowl (again), Jazz and Sunstreaker with them but they delayed the Autobots long enough for Bombshell to implant Irwin with a cerebro shell and instruct him to write a smear piece on their enemies. End of the Road

Dreamwave Comics continuity[]

At some point in Cybertron's recent history, the Stunticons were deemed psychotic and too dangerous to function in society, and as a result were placed into perpetual stasis lock inside of a prison facility. Later, in an attempt to create a diversion while he set his final plans in motion, Shockwave arranged for the release of the Stunticons. They formed into Menasor and ran amuck for a while, until Ultra Magnus arrived and began insulting them. Unable to reconcile with this, the five Stunticons began to bicker with each other over whose fault it was that they were failing, temporarily stopping Menasor and allowing Ultra Magnus to ram the combiner in the chest, forcing him to separate into his component parts and disabling the Stunticons. Passive Aggression

Toys[]

Generation One[]

Japanese ID number: D-50 through D-54
G1Motormaster toy

If his feet are made out of a truck cab, he should be like, three times taller than Optimus Prime. But apparently it's just a tiny truck.

G1Wildrider toy

If you don't buy this toy, then the terrorists have... lost, I guess?

As a Scramble City combiner team, the Stunticons consist of four small "limbs", sold carded at the $5 price point, and a single larger leader toy that forms the combined robot's torso, sold boxed for roughly $12. They were available in 1986 and 1987.
The smaller Stunticons, like their Aerialbot counterparts, share a general transformation scheme involving pulling out the back of the vehicle to form legs, and flipping the hood out of the way to reveal the robot head. Dead End and Breakdown share an additional step, requiring rotating their legs at the knees and pushing the legs back in so they aren't incredibly tall and skinny. All four feature shoulder articulation and not much else. Each comes with a small pistol for the robot mode, and a huge double-barreled cannon which plugs into the back of the vehicle mode.
The four smaller cars are fairly close in scale, but Motormaster throws the whole equation off. He's a tiny truck compared to his teammates, a point which becomes doubly obvious alongside the much-larger truck form of the original Optimus Prime toy, his supposed arch-rival.
The Stunticons are slightly less prone to being produced as knockoffs than the other Scramble City teams. Inexplicably, three members of the group (Motormaster, Breakdown and Drag Strip) are frequently packaged by bootleggers with two members of the Technobots. Drag Strip was named "Brain Man" in at least one such set.

Unreleased[]

  • Generation 2 Stunticons were originally planned to be released alongside the Aerialbots, Combaticons, and Protectobots. Both the Stunticons and Protectobots were dropped from the lineup, but both came very far along in development before then. In fact, Generation 2 Stunticon and Protectobot limbs have surfaced over the years in what appears to be finished packaging. (Motormaster and Hot Spot have never appeared in finished packaging, but unpainted prototypes have surfaced.) However, these are still exceedingly rare pieces, and all told it is believed that less than a dozen of each team member were produced, with one exception: Breakdown, who was available in relatively small numbers (about 300 pieces) as a BotCon 1994 exclusive.
