In the Director's Chairs[]

Rob Powers sez: "What the hell? It's not some cross-cultural misunderstanding; it's a JOKE. The animators wouldn't be working from verbal instructions; they'd have his name WRITTEN DOWN ON PAPER.)"
Except that, mispronunciation of Hoist aside, Tracks's name was the ONLY ONE misspelled on the chairs, so it might not have been part of the running gag. As for having names written down on paper, the actual animators at the time might not have had the English spelling handy. If they had character references written in Japanese, then the chance for the linguistically based typo crops up. Yeah, it's pretty much speculation, but I'm just noting how the idea might be worth more than simply dismissing out of hand.--Apcog 19:50, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

I'm trusting the instincts of my 12-year-old self, who immediately noted the gag (having them all misspelled would've been overkill.) I'll grant that a lot of strange English pops up in the backgrounds of various episodes that clearly is the result of non-English-speaking animators, but those aren't the names of actual characters. I find it hard to believe there wouldn't have been a script, a model sheet, a storyboard, SOMETHING with the characters' names on it, close at hand... though I suppose it's not totally impossible. I'd be fine with a hybridized note that includes both the pronunciation and the likelihood of a gag, since ultimately both views are indeed speculation.
(also, sorry for comin' down so harsh. I kinda forget sometimes that around here I'm not dealing with the overbearing OMG JAPAN attitude that was so rampant way back in the day on ATT.) -- Repowers 20:07, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

If memory serves, is this not also the episode with a sign on a door that reads "CLLOSE"? (EDIT: And hey, by actually looking at the article, I can see it is!) - Chris McFeely 20:19, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
There is a lot of evidence for the misspelling being an accident. Though to be honest, my initial instinct was that it was part of the gag. -- SFH 20:24, 16 June 2008 (UTC)
